Introduction
We are pleased to announce that the "Symposium on the Future of Heliospheric Science: From Geotail and Beyond" will be held at Koshiba-Hall, University of Tokyo, between 28 -31 March 2023.
The Geotail satellite, launched in July 1992 from Florida, U. S. A., as a joint project between ISAS (now JAXA) and NASA, has been studying the structure and dynamics of the magnetotail and other key regions of the magnetosphere. It has achieved epoch-making results, including numerous discoveries in magnetospheric physics. After more than three decades in operation, a failure of the onboard data recorder that occurred at the end of June has considerably reduced the amount of data that can be received, while data from some onboard instruments are no longer available. Therefore, we decided to end Geotail's operation, which was terminated at the end of November 2022.
The purpose of this symposium is to link the tremendous results of Geotail to the future by reviewing the achievements of Geotail to date and looking forward to the exploration of the inner heliosphere system that consists of several sub-systems, Geospace, planetary system, interplanetary space, and the Sun in the late 2020s. The exploration will further expand its area to the whole heliosphere beyond that time frame. Future exploration will also contribute to the space weather research/forecast that supports human activities in Geospace, Moon, and other planets.
The symposium will be held in a hybrid format. In addition to invited talks, We call for contributed papers (mainly face-to-face poster presentations) dealing with not only limited to Geotail results, but also recent research results related to the exploration of the heliosphere (including the planetary system, the Geospace, interplanetary space, and the Sun as subsystems), proposals for future heliospheric system science exploration missions, and research results related to the science instruments necessary for realizing these missions. We are also planning to publish the proceedings of the symposium as a special issue of Earth, Planets and Space.
